We were asked recently on our Facebook Page how to train a German Shepherd when they were older then a puppy.
The question was “Can you train them?”
Well the answer is Yes you can!
How to Train a German Shepherd
You have to be very persistent and let them know that no matter what they do, you are going to be there to correct them.
If they think you aren’t going to jump up and correct them they will do whatever they want.
By doing the same actions every time they break the rules, eventually their thought processes will change to include the new programming.
Our resident expert has a similar issue with his dogs.
He has a metal gate that opens and closes every time he leaves or comes home.
Of course, he doesn’t want his German Shepherds going out so he spent a lot of time driving the car to go out and then opened the gate.
If one of the dogs start coming to the gate, he gets out of the car and drags them by the collar to the front of the house.
He puts them down and says “Down – Stay” and make the “Stay” hand gesture.
He then goes back to the car and tries to leave again.
If they get up and come to the car, he gets out of the car again and repeats the entire sequence until they stay there and lets him leave without trying to get out.
After a few times, it definitely sticks and the dogs don’t try to get out.
Being persistent and continuing the training until it’s programmed into your dog is the key to this training.
You can train a German Shepherd Dog of any age.
Spending some time now and learning how to train a german shepherd dog will give both you, and your dog, peace of mind knowing that they will obey the rules and be safe.
Please make sure the dog is really happy at home. There may be some other reason the dog is trying to leave.
Maybe you have another dog that is constantly trying to beat up on that dog.
If so, then it has a good reason to try to leave and no amount of training will help.
