This seemingly smiling German Shepherd dog will certainly pull out a smile on your face as well. Perhaps he has done something really naughty…

Did you know…
German Shepherds and dogs in general do project joy and happiness, yet not necessarily using their mouths. When your GSD feels genuinely comfortable, he could actually place his mouth in such a way that really appears like a smile. Yet he might make such a face when he’s not truly comfortable, too.
Body language can be an efficient gauge of exactly how secure your GSD feels. Comfortable dogs have a general looseness to their physical bodies, and that applies to their mouth, too.
However, a smiley expression in your furry pal does not always suggest joy and happiness. If your dog’s mouth is open simply a tad, with the sides elevated, he might in fact be anxious, tense or otherwise in distress. Indications of distress also include hefty panting with the tongue in, whining and chattering teeth.
