Were you able to teach your dog how to fetch?
Did you know…
The instinct to chase after whatever you throw is all in your dog’s genes. If youâre lucky, your German Shepherd will play fetch naturally, however, only a few really understand the concept of retrieving. While dogs will generally chase after the toy, some wonât bring it back.
Teaching your GSD play fetch is a great way to bond and have fun with him, and at the same time a good form of exercise. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Start training him as early as possible. It is best if you can train your German Shepherd while he’s still a puppy. It is much easier because young dogs are more responsive to new commands. But you can still teach older GSDs provided you have the patience to train him consistently, and of course with the help of plenty of treats.
- Choose a toy that is not small enough for him to swallow and not big enough that it can’t fit into your dog’s mouth. It is recommended that train using his favorite toys. Squeaky toys usually attracts dog’s attention.
- At first, just throw the toy near the both of you, just a few feet away. When your GSD picks up the toy, get your dog’s attention and call her to come to you. Don’t forget to praise her for picking it up.
- Repeat your training sessions several times a day. Just be patient and your pal will soon know what to do. As you GSD gets more familiar with your fetch routine, you can try other objects like frisbee, a ball, whatever. And of course, always reward her with a tasty treat and praise each time.
