Did you know…

You can effectively use treats to reinforce a calm, submissive dog behavior. Never give your German Shepherd treats as a reward to an excited or over-stimulated behavior. The best way to give a treat is to let your furry friend to smell the treat first. By doing this you are engaging your dog’s nose, which appeals to the most important part of his brain. Then hold it up away from him and make him wait. If your dog jump around at first, show your disapproval by slowly moving yourself back and then wait.

Your GSD will eventually begin to try to figure out what he needs to do to get his treat. Once he lower his butt to the floor and wait while looking at you, give him his treat. This will reinforce an excited dog a calm, submissive state.

Also, the best time to give your pet treats is in between meals and not immediately before or after his meal.
