When and How to Tape GSD’s Ears

Many owners start to panic when their GS puppies’ ears are not standing even upon reaching 3 or 4 months. During this time, you pup may need a little more time until he has finished teething. It is not recommended to tape your dog’s ears too early, or worse, you might tape it the wrong way. There are many cases wherein owners screwed their buddies’ears for good.

On the other hand, taping your pup’s ears a little too late would not help him either. If you GS does not have his ears stand by 5 months, it is recommended to try taping his ears. But before doing that, make sure that your pal is in good health. Take him to the vet to eliminate any kind of illness that may contribute to his ears not standing up.

In taping your GS ears, only use thin white surgical tape (never use duct tapes or any other similar tapes). Then wrap each ear around a foam and tape them in a vertical position tightly. You can use a popsicle stick and place it in a horizontally, attaching the top part of both ears.

Be patient in re-taping his ears. After a week, take the tape off and see if his ears could stand on their own. Continue doing this process until the ears stand. If nothing happens by 7 or 8 months, it is most likely that his ears won’t be able to come up.
