Understanding Canine Body Language
How well do you know your dog? Do you understand his facial expression and body language? Here’s a quick guide:
Eyes — Just like with people, our furry buddy’s eyes brighten when he sees something or someone that he likes or wants to play with. Whenever he’s afraid, his pupils dilate. If your pal is is angry or ready to defend himself, his eyes narrow and tend to follow your every move.
Lips, teeth and tongue — If your pooch is happy or wants something from you, he may appear to be smiling and show his teeth. A relaxed dog typically let his tongue loll out of his mouth. However, if your pal bares his clenched teeth and wrinkles his nose, he is in attack mode.
Ears — Our dogs have the ability to move and turn their ears to follow sounds. Generally, a relaxed dog has ears that are raised. If his ears are back, it may mean submission or he may be fearful.
Tail — A happy and playful dog wags his tail. On the other hand, when you see him tuck his tail between his legs it indicates a submissive state.
