Lovely German Shepherd sticking his tongue out and looking so naughty. I wonder what he’s done before this shot. 🙂

Healthy Dog Tongue Color
As a responsible dog owner it is extremely important that you know what your pal’s tongue looks like when he’s healthy so as you’d know if there’s any sudden changes. The “normal” tongue color of dogs varies. Some canines may have pinker, while some may have redder color. If you notice any sudden change in your buddy’s tongue shape, color or texture, it is very important that you talk to your vet about it.
Here’s a guide to assessing your dog’s tongue color based on the TCM principles:
Pale or white tongue – may indicate a weakened body condition. Animals with anemia, leukemia, blood pressure problems, edema, gastric system malfunction, lung weakness, and malnutrition, often have this tongue color.
Deep red tongue – this may be a sign of hyperactivity of one of the organ systems of the bod. Also, it may indicate bacterial or viral infection, gall bladder or kidney stagnation, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or accumulation of toxins somewhere in the body.
Bluish or purple-tinged tongue – this color may indicate pain or congestion somewhere in the body. Also it may be a sign of a problem with the vascular system, circulatory problems, respiratory problems, liver disease or autoimmune issues.
Yellow-orange tongue – this color may be a sign of gastritis as well as gall bladder and liver malfunction.
