Preventing Toy Aggression
While some dogs are willing to share their food and toys with their good buddies, many develop aggression when it comes to their favorite toys. Playing with other dogs is very important to your dog, and learning how to share his toys is a big part of that.
In order to prevent toy aggression you must teach your pal the “drop it” and “take it” commands. You may start by sitting next to your dog (preferably on leash so he can’t escape with his toy). Have something on hand like a stick and say “take it.” Keep holding the stick while he’s chewing it. He must only chew on the stick for about 5-10 seconds, and then say “drop it”Â. As you say this, lightly lean your upper body towards him. Only repeat this drill when your dog is calm and not demanding the stick back.
Another thing you can do is trade a better item for the toy to persuade your pooch to relinquish the toy. Remember, be patient as you practice this drill every day with lots of different items.
