Dealing With a Jealous Dog

Dogs are happiest when they feel secure in the pack. When a new dog comes in the picture, your GSD may become jealous. In order to prevent your dog from acting jealously, here are some useful tips.

First, introduce the new dog’s scent to your GSD. Let him sniff the new dog’s blanket or toy. Then praise to your dog as he investigates the new scent in order to build a positive association.

When meeting the new dog, choose a neutral place for a more harmonious introduction, such as a park. It is not recommended to bring the new dog straight into your home. This may result in unnecessary tensions. Remember, both dogs must be leashed during the initial meeting. Let them smell each other.

When you finally bring the new dog to your home, teach your jealous dog to stay as you pet the other one.
Use treats to get your jealous dog to relax and create a positive association with the other dog.
