White GSD Care: Preventing and Removing Stains

If you own a white German Shepherd then you know that it is sometimes quite challenging to keep him looking clean and white. Aside from the usual dirt hazards of everyday living, white dogs are just prone to staining. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to solve this problem.

Check if it’s due to his diet. Many dogs develop red staining, particularly on their paws, muzzles and tummies. These areas may suggest that the staining is due to the quality of water or because of the red dye in their food. Staining agent may be transferred through your pal’s saliva as he licks his feet or tummy. Also, food allergies may cause red staining on the paws. You can try changing your dog’s food and see if it will reduce or eliminate the staining problem. You can also ask your vet to rule out any serious cause.

Use bluing shampoo once or twice a month. Such product helps create an optical illusion of whiteness. The bluing can help remove some light yellow stains from your buddy’s white coat. When you use a bluing shampoo, massage it on the dog’s coat until the shampoo lather becomes white. Thoroughly rinse the bluing shampoo and then wash it with a gentle dog shampoo after.

Try using enzymatic and clarifying shampoos. These products are known to remove yellow stains from dog’s coat. These type of shampoos effectively remove stains caused by blood, tears or saliva. They can also be used to eliminate stains from red clay soil or black dirt. However, keep in mind that such products contain harsh chemicals too. Therefore you should not use it frequently. Plus, you should always use a good conditioner after bathing your dog with a clarifying shampoo.

For a more natural solution you can use baking soda paste. It can also help clean graying or stained coats. Simply apply the baking soda paste to affected areas, leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.
