How Much Do Dogs Sleep?
Unlike humans, who are awake most of the day and then asleep for about eight hours at night, dogs really donât have a regular pattern. So the amount of time your pal spends in dreamland really varies. Dogs normally take short naps throughout the day.
Research estimates that in general, our canine buddies only spend about 10% of their sleeping time in REM sleep. They don’t get as much deep sleep as we do, so they need more naps to get enough rest.
The amount of sleep for a dog depends on several factors such as:
Age. Younger and senior dogs tend to sleep more than adults. Puppies are bouncy, and run around until they get exhausted. Old dogs also need to recharge their batteries more often.
Activity Level. Active dogs such as working dogs, tend to sleep less. Apparently, they are working during the day and don’t have much nap times. Bored dogs are likely to sleep more due to boredom.
Size. Bigger dog breeds tend to sleep more than smaller canines. They can sleep as much as 18 hours a day.
