Protecting Your German Shepherd’s Feet from Summer Heat

This is Malakai, a beautiful German Shepherd who knows how to have a great time on the beach. I wonder if those paw prints on the sand are Malakai’s.

Tips to Protect Your Dog’s Paws During Summer

Pavement, metal, asphalt, sand and other materials that absorb heat can be become really hot during summer time. As we’d love to have fun with our pals outside, it is important that we know how to protect their sensitive from from getting burned. Here are some suggestions:

Check the pavement before taking your dog on a walk. Try the surface on your bare foot for about 10 seconds. If it is too hot that you can’t keep your foot on it, then it’s too hot for your pet either.

Stay on grassy surfaces. As much as possible avoid bare ground during summer months.

Avoid getting out during the hottest times of the day. If you want to walk with your buddy, it is best to do it early in the morning or late in the evening, when the pavement has cooled down.

Signs of burned paw pads:

Paw pads appear darker than usual,

Excessive licking or chewing at the feet,

Missing pieces of the pads,

Blisters,

Limping

If your canine has any of those symptoms, your first step should be to cool his paws down. If possible, rinse his feet with cool water. And then take your buddy to see your veterinarian immediately.
