German Shepherd Puppy Care Tips
GS puppies are very cute and at the same time, quite fragile. It is therefore important that you know how to properly take care of your young German Shepherd. Here are some basic reminders:
- Get a dry dog food designed for their age. Consider that you can’t just give any kind of dog food to your young pal. There are dog foods with antibiotics, too much protein or enriched with certain minerals that can harm your pup. Ask your vet for recommendation.
- Feed your pup three times a day. Young German Shepherds should be allowed to eat until he is full. This will help him grow properly.
- Offer fresh water at all times. Water is essential to both young and mature dogs. Make sure your pup has access to clean water at all times.
- Provide medications and essential vaccinations to your pup. Puppies have “immunity transition” stage. Make sure you visit your vet to give him important vaccinations, such as rabies, parvovirus and distemper vaccines.
- Socialize your pup to your home and his new environment. When his vaccines are all complete you can start taking him for walks and to places with new people and other dogs. This will help him become comfortable with other people and animals.
- Toilet train your pal after it reaches five weeks of age. Be very patient in potty training your pup. Do not yell at him as it will only reinforce bad behavior. Take him outside each morning to defecate and urinate until he develops the habit.
- Groom him regularly. Bathe and brush your young buddy regularly to keeps him clean and to avoid any fur or skin problems.
- Give your pup enough exercise to channel out his excessive energy. Young German Shepherds are very active. Let him run and play to drain his overflowing energy.
