Picking up a new German Shepherd puppy is exciting for us humans, however, it can be a stressful situation for your current dog.
Many dog owners think that getting a new puppy will be harmonious, and that their current dog will be a good dog parent or older sibling. In the end, many owners get disappointed with the results.
In order to maintain a happy household, you need to properly introduce the older dog to the new member of the family, and vice versa.
Here are some tips on how to properly introduce an older German Shepherd to a puppy:
– When you make the introduction between your older GSD and your puppy, keep both dogs on leashes so you can control them individually
– Never ever let the older one intimidate the puppy
– Never leave the two of them alone with each other. Always supervise their playtime. Even if it appears like they’re getting on, this can brand-new connection can change in a second
– Never allow your older dog to abuse his little brother/sister and vice versa. If needed, separate them in crates.
– Feed and walk each pet separately.
Always keep in mind that when you obtain a new puppy, never disregard your older pet dog. Shower both of them with affection to keep them from feeling jealous of each other. A great dog parent must love each dog equally.
